Tallac Historic Site Trial
Difficulty: Easy, Handicap accessible
Elevation: Flat
Mileage (one way): 0.3 miles
Directions to Trailhead : Take Highway 89 north approximately 3 miles from South Lake Tahoe. Turn into either the Tallac Historic Site or Visitor Center Parking lots.
Trail : The trail begins from the Kiva Picnic Area or the site can also be reached from the Lake of the Sky Trail that begins at the Lake Tahoe Visitor Center. This is really more like a stroll, but the historical buildings and Lake Tahoe views make it a magical place and worth investigating if you have time. The kids will enjoy the beach and the adults will appreciate the grounds and historic buildings that are really quite something.
Attractions and Considerations : A century ago, what is now the Tallac Historic Site held the “Grandest Resort in the World” and the summer retreats for three of San Francisco Bay Area’s socially elite families. Today, the remains of the resort and the restored estates attract thousands of visitors annually to recapture this bygone and significant era in Tahoe’s history. Between June and September you may join a Tallac interpreter for heritage programs, guided walks, building tours, demonstrations, behind the scenes peeks, and more.
