Kokanee Salmon Festival at Lake Tahoe
October 6th and 7th – Kokanee Salmon Festival at Lake Tahoe
Looking for an educational and free family event? The Kokanee Salmon Festival is that and so much more. It is a celebration of the annual fall migration of the land-locked Kokanee Salmon featuring many activities to participate in. Take part in the Salmon Feed, foot races for all ages, streamside programs, and educational booths and programs. View native Sierra Nevada wildlife onstage at the Wild Things presentation. Activities for children include exploring a 40-foot inflatable fish, plus visits from Smokey Bear and two new mascots, Sandy and Rocky Salmon. Delicious barbecue salmon steaks will be served, plus other non-fish food items.
From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday Forest Service biologists will talk about the natural wonders of Taylor Creek as they stroll the ½ mile loop Rainbow Trail. This easy stroll winds through forests, meadows and marsh lands to the Kokanee Salmon spawning areas. For a close-up view of this natural event visit the underground Stream Profile Chamber located along the Rainbow Trail path.
The festival takes place at the Lake Tahoe Visitor Center at Taylor Creek, just 3 miles north of South Lake Tahoe, CA just north of Camp Richardson Resort and Marina. For additional information contact the Lake Tahoe Visitor Center at (530) 543-2674.
