Please be aware this is a very popular and congested area. We strongly encourage all visitors, especially those planning overnight camping trips, to take mass transit to this trailhead.
Trail(s) : Eagle Falls is located right off Highway 89 and is just yards from the Eagle Falls Picnic Area. Many people stop to look at the falls. If you want an easy to moderate hike that does not take long then venture up to Eagle Lake (1 mile, one-way) where you will be rewarded with a beautiful high lake chilly enough to cool your toes. Just a 20 minute walk, Eagle Lake is a popular short hike and an easier one for families with kids.
Continuing on into the heart of Desolation Wilderness the trail gets steeper, but starts to offer more majestic views of the Sierra high country. You can choose to hike on into the three Velmas, Dicks, and Fontanillis Lakes. Many hikers pack in gear for overnight stays in Desolation Wilderness high lake areas. For hikers and campers Desolation Wilderness offers the perfect combination of outdoor adventure and beauty. The peak summer months are best for overnight stays.
Attractions and Considerations : A wilderness permit is required. Day hikers, pick up your permit at the self serve area at the trailhead. Overnight hikers will need an overnight permit for Desolation Wilderness. This permit must be purchased before you get to the Eagle Falls Trailhead. Visitors can reserve overnight permits online by visiting www.recreation.gov.
